Week ONE!!!
Linz & Erin’s Excellent LOCAL Adventure…
GEORGE and ORANGE Taproom & Kitchen!!
You know that feeling you get when you walk into a friend’s house… maybe one you’ve only recently met, or maybe it’s a friend you’ve had for years. It’s it’s a place that from the very start, you just feel welcome in. Like you belong.
That’s the core of George and Orange. Your favourite hang-out couldn’t be warmer, than this uber rustic taproom & kitchen. Let’s just take a moment, and picture the coolest of old saloons. But garner a side of a cozy barn… (minus the stalls) great wood and iron work (check out Old Grain Design – also local!!! Holla!!) and then top it off with the neighbourhood feel of “Cheers”. It is Cobourg, after all!!
I’d like to preface this by saying… we met Jenna a couple weeks ago. Erin and she made a connection. Found a common thread. And may have repeated it for all the bar to hear… a couple, few times. I said that pretty eloquently, I believe!! (I’m laughing as I write this!!)
In a room full of people – with just Jenna, the Superwoman owner/bartender, she made each person feel as though they had her individual attention. Being attentive, and honestly interested in each of her patrons, did not go unnoticed.
Fast forward to a few days ago – when we really had Jenna’s attention!! What an absolute doll!! I can call her that, because I am her elder!! 31 years old (Jenna, not me), and a brand new, thriving business, just off the main strip in downtown Cobourg – you’ll never guess the intersection!!?? So clever, and ever so crafty!!! I love it!! Jenna was cordial enough to call in her friend and employee, Ben, to help with shmooozing us!! Bahaha!! Not only does Ben hop into the kitchen, but also bartends, and was at Jenna’s side when designing the menu (ahem, is Ben single!? Asking for a friend!!). We didn’t meet Jenna’s full-time cook, Matt, but clearly we can jump to the conclusion that he’s incredible at what he does!!
So, thanks to Ben for putting together a few “small plate” features for us to test drive. And by “small” – it should really be followed by an “ish”. I’m a huge sharer (and carer), so the Combo Board, was PERRRRRRFECTION!! You had me at “charcuterie”. Done. Towel thrown. BUT THEN along comes the Apple & Gorgonzola Flatbread (died and went to flatbread heaven), along with the duck wings – cause chicken wings are soooo 2016!!
So how good was the food, you ask?? Well, we were enjoying these eats at 2:30 – and my brain seriously allowed me to consider going back for more that night!! For the record… I did not. (Insert sad face. HERE)
George and Orange – Taproom & Kitchen (PS, you know that cool logo… You rock, Hatch Creative!!)… So, you just heard about the kitchen… let’s get into that taproom!!! Beyond the delicious red wine (mmmm wine), and the amazing local craft beers (ahem, William Street Beer Co, NHB and Manantler), you’ll find beautifully creative cocktails!! Enter… “Just In Thyme”. Flipping delicious!! I don’t often stray far from wine – but I may have found a new love – smack dab in this rock glass!! Bourbon, lemon juice, muddled (you kinda lost me!) thyme, sugar syrup, Spanish bitters and wait for it… egg whites!! So, I’m gonna stick to selling real estate, because dear lord, who even thinks to put these things together… and for it to Taste. This. Good. Jenna takes her cocktails seriously!!! Following that lovely little devil with something equally, if not even more so – especially for a wine lover!! The Great Canadian Fizz… Prosecco, maple syrup, cranberry juice and bitters. Just for the record, I don’t even know what bitters are. But, what I do know… this wine I’m drinking while I type this… pales in comparison. Which makes me kinda wanna cry.
So… what’s the final word on this splendid little (40 person capacity) space??

And finally, we put Jenna on the spot… asked her a few tough, super in-depth questions:

- What colour underwear are you wearing?? Let me check… navy!! (a girl who lives on the edge!!)
- What is your fave local eatery? Craft Food House (mmmmm, us too!!)
